Former Spartan standout sentenced

Former MSU wide receiver Plaxico Burress was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday and was taken into custody.

Burress violated New York’s gun laws after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub with a gun that was not licensed in New York. He is expected to serve about 20 months with credit for good behavior but still will be on probation for the following two years.

The nine-year NFL veteran is best known for his game-winning touchdown catch in Super Bowl XLII to upset the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.

Burress caught 131 receptions for 1,155 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns in his two seasons at MSU before being drafted No. 8 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Big ten network to feature msu hockey

The MSU hockey team will be featured twice on the Big Ten Network this season.

The Spartans’ first game on the network will be against Ohio State on Jan. 23 and the second game will be the following weekend, Jan. 29, against Michigan.

Four of the last eight NCAA Championships have been won by Big Ten schools.

MSU runner receives conference honor

MSU women’s cross country senior Emily MacLeod was named the Big Ten Female Runner of the Week on Tuesday.

In Friday’s Spartan Invitational, MacLeod finished the 6,000-meter course with a personal-best 21 minutes, 7 seconds, which was 12 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. The laurel was the first in MacLeod’s career and the first for the women’s cross country team since Oct. 21, 2008.
