Bill Burke

MSU vs. Notre Dame 3:30 p.m., NBC

MB: Well, this isn’t exactly the battle of the titans it was looking like last Friday, but it still should be a solid game nonetheless. Mark Dantonio has thoroughly outcoached Charlie Weis on two occasions, but Notre Dame’s offense has looked good this season and it has a lot of weapons. This’ll be a shootout after last year’s defensive affair. MSU’s defense couldn’t come up with a stop to save its life last week. It’s difficult to see the switch getting flipped in one week to make that big of a difference.

Notre Dame 42, MSU 38

CV: Every year the Spartans go to South Bend, Ind., they should be leaving empty-handed, but they don’t. it’s a home away from home. With Notre Dame’s offense clicking and the Spartans coming off an embarrassing loss, I expect the Spartans to come out with a whole different offense based around Kirk Cousins’ arm. There needs to be consistency at quarterback and Cousins should get most of the snaps and be allowed to air it out. If he does, this could be another classic in this rivalry.

Notre Dame 35, MSU 31

JN: On one hand, you have the mighty Fighting Irish tradition that makes the program one of the greatest in college football history. On the other hand, you have recent history, in which the Spartans essentially have plastered a green “Home” sign on the visitor’s locker room. Both teams are coming off equally dismal performances in Week 2. So the question is, who would you rather have lighting the fire under a 1-1 team before a crucial rivalry game — Mark Dantonio or Charlie Weis?

MSU 38, Notre Dame 33

BB: The Spartans have shined brighter than the Golden Dome itself, winning the last six at Notre Dame Stadium. The Green and White make it seven Saturday, easing the sting of last week’s nightmare loss to CMU.

MSU 28, Notre Dame 27

California vs. Minnesota Noon, ESPN

MB: The Golden Gophers have come up with two gritty wins to open the season and I’m sure the new TCF Bank Stadium will be rocking, but I can’t see it being enough. Although Minnesota has a great combo in Adam Weber and Eric Decker, it won’t be enough to get past a Cal team that has won its first two games by a combined 92 points.

Cal 31, Minnesota 13

CV: I’m impressed with Minnesota’s desire to schedule tough nonconference opponents. However, the Gopher offense hasn’t regained the form it had last year and it will need to because Cal will put up points. Cal’s offense behind quarterback Kevin Riley and running back Jahvid Best is explosive and they will score a lot on the Minnesota defense.

Cal 38, Minnesota 17

JN: Boy, if Minnesota fans thought season-opening games against quality opponents Syracuse and Air Force would be tough, now they get to see the likes of Heisman hopeful Jahvid Best and the Cal Bears. The Gophers have trekked through the first two weeks, but I don’t see the win streak continuing.

Cal 45, Minnesota 24

BB: Cal is tough at home but has lost eight of nine on the road. Their confidence is restored Saturday in the Twin Cities as their speed is too much for the Gophers.

Cal 24, Minnesota 17

Florida vs. Tennessee 3:30 p.m., CBS

MB: An already heated rivalry certainly heated up during the offseason with the hiring of Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. He’s made some remarks about Florida that were none too flattering and it’s going to get taken out on his team this weekend. Florida, in case you haven’t heard, is kinda good.

Florida 56, Tennessee 17

CV: Whatever the point spread is for this game, it won’t be high enough. Lane Kiffin decided to run his mouth and Urban Meyer will make him pay. Tennesee struggled to score against UCLA last week and you don’t have to worry about the defending champ Gators being motivated.

Florida 63, Tennessee 0

JN: I’m not particularly fond of Lane Kiffin waltzing into a storied program such as Tennessee and guaranteeing victories against defending national champions. With Kiffin at the helm, my sympathy for the program and Phil Fulmer fades. Oh, and it’s at The Swamp.

Florida 54, Tennessee 21

BB: Lane Kiffin has been taking shots at Urban Meyer since he took over as head coach of the Volunteers. Bad move. Tim Tebow has defended his coach in the media and the Gators defend The Swamp on Saturday.

Florida 38, Tennessee 13
