Dean rejects call to remove Chicano/Latino Studies program's dean

The dean of the College of Social Science has rejected an advisory committee’s recommendation for the immediate removal of the Chicano/Latino Studies program’s director.

The CLS Office Operations and Implementation Advisory Committee was formed last spring in response to multiple concerns students raised about CLS Director Sheila Contreras.

After meeting several times during the summer to devise a list of recommendations in response to the student concerns, the advisory committee submitted their list in July to College of Social Science Dean Marietta Baba.

Among their recommendations, the group asked for Contreras’ removal.

In a written response released Thursday, Baba responded that the committee’s report did not present evidence to “warrant (Contreras’) removal under University policy” and expressed concern about several committee members’ conduct.

Baba agreed with the committee on several other suggested changes to the CLS program, including the addition of a graduate program coordinator for doctoral students.
