Mich. unemployment increases in May

The state’s unemployment rate shot up a more than 1 percentage point in May to 14.1 percent, according to data from the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.

Michigan’s labor force experienced slight changes, with total employment falling by 54,000. At the same time, unemployment rose by 55,000.

The state’s unemployment rate in May was the highest monthly rate recorded in the state since July 1983 and was 8.2 percent higher than May 2008.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate in May was 9.4 percent.
