Students who live off campus can participate in recycling

Students moving out of East Lansing’s neighborhoods for the summer are encouraged to participate in the off-campus expansion of MSU’s Pack Up, Pitch In recycling event.

The event will offer off-campus MSU students with an opportunity to be MSU green while keeping the East Lansing community clean during spring move-out. Items donated will either be recycled or collected for reuse by local charities.

In a day when global warming is the buzzword in environmentalist circles across the world, it is opportunities like these that really can make a difference. Recycling household items and waste can significantly reduce the demand for fossil fuels and preserve carbon dioxide.

The off-campus Pack Up, Pitch In event is rain-or-shine and is nearly free of charge (there will be a $7.50 disposal fee for furniture in poor condition). The event will take place May 7 and May 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the north overflow parking lot of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Volunteers will be on-site to help unload vehicles and check MSU IDs — be sure to bring them!

Volunteers will accept everything from furniture to kitchenware, carpet, electronic waste, non-perishable food, regular recyclables and more. Visit www.cityofeastlansing.com/PackUpPitchIn for a full list of items that will be accepted.

We hope a good show of students will demonstrate their MSU green pride by participating in this earth-friendly event.
