Belongings stolen after false fire alarm at library

Two female students reported belongings stolen from the Main Library when they left items unattended after a fire alarm was pulled, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

The first victim, a 19-year-old, was studying in the west wing of the second floor when the alarm went off at 5:33 p.m. She left her belongings — including a $1,000 laptop and a $20 green shoulder bag — unattended to see if she should evacuate. She returned and her belongings had been taken, McGlothian-Taylor said.

The second victim, a 20-year-old, was studying in the east wing of the second floor. She immediately evacuated the library, grabbing her laptop and wallet but leaving behind her backpack and textbook. When she returned, the items were gone. The textbook was valued at $70, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Police responding to the fire alarm determined there was no fire and the alarm, located in the east wing of the fourth floor, was pulled for no reason. Police have no suspects and the incident is under investigation.
