Ruckus ends abruptly, Web site shuts down

February 8, 2009

Ruckus, a legal music file-sharing program offered to MSU students, shut down Saturday.

The program, promoted by university officials as a way for students to legally share and exchange music, issued a notice on its Web site Saturday afternoon saying the “service will no longer be provided,” with no other information available.

Through the program, students could download music for free that would play on their computers for 30 days. The downloaded files were not transferable to MP3 players or CDs.

In 2006, MSU partnered with Ruckus in an attempt to curb illegal media downloads from campus Internet service providers.
