An accidental fire started Thursday morning in a trash receptacle outside University Village Apartments when a garbage truck overheated, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
The fire resulted in $500 worth of damage to the receptacle and the Volvo garbage truck. The fire caused paint damage to both the truck and trash receptacle and melted the plastic cover to the trash receptacle.
The truck had loaded scorched trash from Cherry Lane Apartments at about 8:22 a.m., which could have factored in causing the fire, McGlothian-Taylor said. The East Lansing Fire Department and MSU police were notified of the fire at 10:15 a.m.
Debris from the fire has been disposed of and the case is now closed, McGlothian-Taylor said.
