Big Rapids — For a second consecutive night, senior goaltender Jeff Lerg came through with an effort good enough to lead the MSU hockey team to victory — only this time, the Spartans were able to hold on to an early lead.
After making several critical stops among his 44 saves in a 2-2 tie with Ferris State on Friday, Lerg made senior forward Matt Schepke’s goal 36 seconds into the game stand up, as he stopped all 32 shots he faced in MSU’s 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
“Overall, I think our kids worked hard,” MSU head coach Rick Comley said. “I think I only played nine forwards for the most part, so guys had to play in situations they haven’t had to play in all year.”
Lerg made seven of his 32 saves while Ferris State had the man advantage, as the Spartans killed all seven Bulldogs power plays.
Lerg once again had to be strong in the second period, making 14 saves as the Bulldogs pressed.
“We did a great job defensively,” Lerg said.
On the other end, Ferris State goaltender Taylor Nelson made 18 saves, including a few crucial saves in big moments.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend, hosting Ohio State for two games starting at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
