College of Osteopathic Medicine deserves recognition, too

Although I greatly appreciated the Page One coverage given to the College of Human Medicine expansion in Construction of Secchia Center may finish under $90M budget (SN 2/12), I wanted to gently remind you that MSU also educates physicians in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). Ranked seventh in the nation among all medical schools — M.D. and D.O. — for its primary care education, MSUCOM also is expanding to meet the projected physician shortage. Two new sites, one at Macomb University Center in Clinton Township, Mich. and one at Detroit Medical Center downtown, will be opened in June with 50 members of the 2009 entering class at each. This expansion will increase the number of MSUCOM first-year students from 200 to 300 each year. Between our two human medical colleges, MSU currently has more first-year medical students on campus than anywhere else in the country. The bottom line? We’re proud of the expansion of both of our human medical schools, working in communities from coast to coast in Michigan to serve its people.
