Comley welcomes 4 new recruits

November 26, 2008

With the lack of offensive production this season for the MSU hockey team, head coach Rick Comley said it’s going to be vital to bring players to MSU who bring offensive power and physical strength to the table.

“As we’ve watched this team evolve we’ve seen what we are deficient in,” Comley said. “We’ve (been) beat up the last couple weeks because we’ve played bigger, older, stronger teams.”

On Monday, Comley announced the addition of four future Spartans who will join the team for the 2009-10 campaign.

Forwards Zach Golembiewski and Derek Grant are both the type of players that Comley has been searching for to help soothe the offensive woes occurring this season.

“They are both complete players,” Comley said. “Grant is 6-foot-3 and is highly skilled and highly thought of. Many think he might be best forward out there. Golembiewski is younger from US (National Team Development Program) and he’s adjusting to the USHL. But he has good size and good skills.”

Joining the two forwards are two big defensemen who Comley hopes will bring a physical, gritty style to the Spartans lineup.

Matt Grassi, 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, would be the biggest player in the Spartans lineup if he were on the team this year and Comley said his physical presence is going to be a big asset to the team.

“He’s really come into his own like some kids do,” Comley said. “He’s very skilled and (has) very good puck skills. He doesn’t run over people necessarily but uses his size very well. He’s a power play type kid that moves puck very well.”

Joining Grassi on the blueline is Wantagh, N.Y., native Zack Josepher. Josepher is currently the top scoring defenseman for the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League.

“Josepher is a New York kid and we saw what (Tim) Kennedy and (Chris) Mueller did for our program in a positive way,” Comley said. “He’s hard-nosed, tough kid with good skills.”

With a young team returning next season, Comley believes his four recruits are talented enough to have an immediate impact on the team.

“It’s all about readiness to play,” Comley said. “What has become obvious is that we’ve had to add some size, toughness and talent to this team. I think what we’ve announced so far does that.”
