'The Show' relevant, entertaining

Kyle Feldscher

It’s amazing a program like “The Show” from MSU Telecasters can be watchable and funny enough to last 20 years and 66 episodes, and still many students have never even heard of it.

I watched the latest episode of “The Show” from April — “The Guest Star, Pt. 1” — and enjoyed what I saw. Though there wasn’t an abundance of knee-slapping, laugh-out-loud moments, it was definitely enough to keep me entertained.

A trait that seems to be consistent in most TV shows that last a long time is the ability to adapt whatever is happening in contemporary life to the small screen. The story in this episode revolves around characters involved in a Michael Vick-esque pit bull fight, and another who is willing to engage in a threesome for Britney Spears tickets — showing the program’s ability to accomplish the task.

I think the one part of “The Show,” at least in this episode, I really didn’t care for was the switching of actresses playing Claire Campbell, one of the main characters in the current cast.

Darcy Dittrich (who continues to play Campbell this year) and Kaela Nichols both played the same character in this episode and, after the confusion passed, it was just kind of strange seeing each actress bring a different dynamic to the character.

My favorite character in this episode was definitely Travis, played by Suroosh Marzban. As a die-hard Britney Spears fan willing to engage in a shady threesome for tickets to her comeback tour, Marzban lit up the screen whenever his character was present.

I also enjoyed Christopher Reed, playing Tommy — the fantastically awkward brother of Campbell’s boyfriend Jeff (Hazen Natzmer).

The mixture between relevant writing and decent acting was a pleasant surprise, given the fact that these aren’t exactly show-biz professionals.

The work done on “The Show” really speaks to the progression of the program from an ambitious live, comedy hour to a staple of the MSU Telecasters lineup.
