The No. 8 MSU field hockey team got off to a fast start and never looked back in its 9-1 victory over Indiana on Friday at Ralph Young Field.
“I think this is the best game we have played so far this season,” head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said.
The team controlled play for the entire first half, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes, two by sophomore forward Jantine Steinmetz, and preventing the Hoosiers from getting a shot. The Spartans went into the break with a 4-0 lead.
“Everything we have been working on, the puzzle pieces are falling together.” van de Kerkhof said. “I think if we can continue to do what we did today as a team, we are going to be fine for the rest of the season. It’s nice that everybody is working together, playing hard for each other, helping each other out, picking each other up, creating opportunities. We saw a great Spartan field hockey team today.”
The Spartans started off the second period with the same intensity as the first, scoring their fifth goal five minutes into the half. Even as Indiana scored its first and only goal off a penalty corner, MSU answered less than a minute later when junior midfielder Floor Rijpma scored her second of the game. Rijpma had four goals in the game.
“The whole team was really coming together,” Rijpma said. “We were really connecting well. It was just a great game for all of us. We’ve been connecting so well, but today we really came out in a strong offense and defense. It started from (goaltender Elissa) Unger all the way up to the forwards. Every single person was just working their (butt) off to get more goals.”
With the win, the Spartans move to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. They look to continue their seven game winning streak Sunday against Temple at Ralph Young Field.
