The East Lansing City Council will set the date for public hearings regarding the rezoning of several properties at its work session tonight.

There are several zoning modifications going before council, including proposed zoning for property on Lake Lansing Road that currently is not included in the city’s zoning classification, said Tim Schmitt, a community development analyst for East Lansing.
“Two properties were annexed into the city in 2006, and they’re vacant land and a church,” he said.
The proposed rezoning would allow the vacant land to be put to commercial use.
Council is expected to approve a public hearing on the proposals for its Nov. 18 meeting.
There also is a proposal to include hotels in one of the office zoning areas, based on the request of a property owner, Schmitt said.
The planning commission recommended the proposals to council at its meeting Wednesday.
The council also will hear an update on the planning process for the city’s form-based code, which would not only place requirements on the types of buildings allowed in an area, but could require certain physical features.
“(About) a month ago, staff brought us a work plan kind of laying out … almost a three-year timeline for accomplishing a form-based code,” Councilmember Kevin Beard said.
Council expects to hear an update on the work plan tonight, he said.
The zoning issues the council is hearing aren’t related to the form-based code zoning plan, as the city has been considering this plan for a while and is a larger planning process, Councilmember Nathan Triplett said.
“But at the same time we’re working with larger issues; we have to re-evaluate requests that come up,” he said.
