Arson participant arrested Tuesday

October 1, 2008

One of the four participants in MSU’s 1999 Agriculture Hall arson was arrested Tuesday evening at her mother’s house in Stanwood, Mich.

Marie J. Mason was found guilty Friday of conspiracy to commit arson and two counts of substantiated arson, federal Prosecutor Hagen Frank said.

Mason was responsible for setting fire to research on genetically modified organisms, resulting in more than $1 million in damage.

She was arrested based on fear she would flee before her Feb. 5 sentencing, and because the conditions of her bond changed after the judge officially found her guilty, Frank said.

“It changed the legal footing,” he said.

Mason was on home confinement with an electronic tether before her arrest.
