Men's soccer postponed Sunday after weekend rain

September 14, 2008

Joe Baum

The men’s soccer team had its game against Illinois-Chicago canceled Sunday due to standing water at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

“We were disappointed we couldn’t play,” MSU head coach Joe Baum said. “But once you get standing water on the field, it’s very dangerous for the players.”

On Friday, the Spartans (2-3) were able to defeat Buffalo 1-0 at DeMartin. Sophomore midfielder Jeff Ricondo scored the lone goal off a pass from Louis Stephens III.

Sophomore Avery Steinlage started in goal for MSU and made three saves.

Each team fired 10 shots at the goal.

Baum thinks Sunday’s extra day off will help his players as they prepare for their Big Ten opener at Ohio State at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“We wanted to get a win today because it would be a great momentum starter going into this weekend,” he said. “But I know we will be ready to play Ohio State.”
