1) Despite the relative proximity of Ypsilanti to East Lansing (about 60 miles according to Google Maps), MSU and Eastern Michigan on average play each other just once every 15.4 years. The schools have dueled seven times during the span of three centuries, including three times in the 19th century.
2) Much has changed since MSU and Eastern Michigan’s first meeting in 1898: William McKinley was president of the United States, the U.S. was at war with Spain, and Michigan State University was known as Michigan Agricultural College. But one thing hasn’t changed over time: The Spartans’ dominance over the Eagles — MSU is 7-0 all-time against them.
3) Eastern Michigan’s 52-0 victory over Indiana State last Saturday was the Eagles’ first shutout victory in 11 seasons. Their last one came in 1997, when the Eagles trounced Akron, 45-0. In between the two shutout victories, EMU suffered four shutout losses. Two of those losses came against Mid-American Conference teams.
4) Eastern Michigan senior linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw is in the running for the Dick Butkus Award (given to the nation’s best linebacker), the Bronco Nagurski Award (given to the best defensive player) and the Rotary Lombardi Award (given to the best lineman), according to its athletics Web site. Holtzclaw’s success has come despite the fact he was lightly recruited out of an Oklahoma high school, where he was a two-star prospect.
