With the growing popularity of mo-ped scooters on campus, you would think the higher-ups in the MSU administration would be smart enough to work with students, faculty and administrative staff to make having a mo-ped on campus easier. They are more environmentally friendly than cars (even the most energy-efficient gas guzzler), they decrease the number of cars parked on campus, they also slightly relieve the stress placed upon the Capital Area Transportation Authority services and promote activity on campus.
Instead, MSU once again has closed its eyes to an opportunity to improve the campus because officials are blinded by the opportunity to be greedy. MSU parking rates for mo-peds less than 50cc that you park at the same parking rack as a bicycle are equivalent to the cost of registering a car on campus. That means you are paying anywhere from $85 to $256 to have the privilege to search for a parking spot on campus (basically having a parking permit), not including other fees you might encounter. MSU’s rationale is that the mo-ped, even ones less than 50cc, are considered vehicles. But let us open our eyes and be honest with ourselves — they are about the size of bicycles and are parked where bicycles are parked. They are not like motorcycles that you normally see in parking spots.
