Guillen named an All-Star reserve

July 7, 2008

Third baseman Carlos Guillen will represent the Detroit Tigers in New York during next week’s 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Guillen was the only Tigers player selected to the American League roster, which includes seven members of the Boston Red Sox and is managed by Boston skipper Terry Francona.

In his first year at third, Guillen is having another solid season. The former shortstop is batting .286 with eight home runs and 44 RBI.

Second baseman Placido Polanco, center fielder Curtis Granderson and right fielder Magglio Ordonez were also considered candidates for a spot on the roster, but they didn’t receive enough votes from fans and weren’t selected by Francona.

This year’s all-star game will be the final one played at historical Yankee Stadium, which is scheduled to close at the end of the season.
