Campaign promotes pedestrian safety

June 2, 2008

While warm temperatures are drawing more people outside this time of year, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is reminding Michigan residents to step up their safety in her “Be Safe, Be Seen” campaign.

The campaign which began in 2006, reminds pedestrians of safety tips like crossing streets at designated crosswalks, carrying flashlights and wearing reflective clothing at night and walking on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic when no sidewalk is present.

Some advice for motorist includes pulling away slowly from driveways and parking areas where pedestrians are present, stopping completely before turning right on a red light and yielding to anyone crossing the street while turning left on a green light.

In 2007, a total of 133 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Michigan, which was down from a total of 192 deaths in 1998. The overall total of pedestrian-vehicle crashes also decreased from 3,891 in 1998 to 2,295 in 2007.
