Obama to stop in Michigan

May 12, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will campaign in Michigan for the first time Wednesday.

Obama will hold a town hall-style meeting in Macomb County and Grand Rapids. The location of the meetings have not been released.

MSU political science chairperson Richard Hula said the move may show Obama is moving into his second phase of campaigning, after likely clinching the Democratic nomination. He said the Illinois senator has ignored Michigan politically since it was stripped of its delegates for moving up its primary.

“He’s trying to secure what should be a Democratic state,” Hula said.

Obama may be trying to act like he is not disenfranchising Michigan, a potential swing-state during the 2008 election, Hula said.
