Police handle Iraq War protest

March 20, 2008

Hundreds of protesters marched through the MSU campus and clogged East Lansing streets Thursday in protest of the war with Iraq.

The protesters were escorted by East Lansing police, who tried to ensure the protest didn’t interfere with Grand River Avenue traffic.

“They were peaceful, so it really wasn’t all that difficult to contain,” East Lansing police Sgt. Larry Sparks said.

Stefan Lanwermeyer, a representative for the campus group Ignite, said the group wanted to draw attention to the amount of money the government is spending on the war.

Seven groups took part in the protest, which drew about 400 participants, Lanwermeyer said.
