Cotter's death ruled a suicide

March 7, 2008

The January death of MSU student Rylan Cotter has been ruled a suicide by an Indiana Coroner’s Office.

The international relations junior’s body was found 28 feet from the base of an electrical tower Jan. 9 on a Chesterton, Ind., golf course.

Porter County Coroner Victoria Deppe said Cotter jumped from the tower. A January autopsy revealed that Cotter died of blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen.

“We’ve painstakingly looked at all the evidence, and what we’ve come up with is Rylan did jump,” Deppe said.

Deppe added that Cotter didn’t make any comments to friends or family prior to her death that would raise a suicide concern.

Chesterton police Lt. Dave Cincoski said police have suspended the criminal investigation into Cotter’s death. Police still do not know why Cotter came to Chesterton.

A toxicology report revealed that Cotter had no illegal substances or alcohol in her system, Deppe said.
