Eleven teams, one goal: Today marks the tip-off of the Big Ten Tournament

March 12, 2008

Eleven teams, one goal. Today marks the tip-off of the Big Ten Tournament, where some teams will come to better their NCAA Tournament seed, others will play to get in and yet others are trying to find something to build on for the future.

MSU (24-7 overall, 12-6 Big Ten)
Player to watch: Junior forward Marquise Gray
Gray’s play on both ends of the floor has escalated during the last few games. When he scores in double digits, the team is 13-1.
Talking point: The Spartans are 3-1 on neutral floors this season, with wins against BYU, Texas and Missouri, while narrowly falling to UCLA.
Odds to win it: 4 to 1

Penn State (15-15, 7-11)
Player to watch: Junior guard Stanley Pringle
If the Penn State students who come to home games dressed as Pringles cans show up, the rest of the conference is doomed.
Talking point: The Nittany Lions have shown upset capability this season, beating Indiana and MSU during the regular season.
Odds to win it: 65 to 1

Ohio State (19-12, 10-8)
Player to watch: Freshman center Kosta Koufos
Koufos has the ability to take over games in the post — averaging 13.7 points and 6.8 rebounds — but he sometimes disappears for stretches.
Talking point: The Buckeyes have the most to play for out of any team in the tournament (if not the nation), sitting as they are on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
Odds to win it: 10 to 1

Northwestern (8-21, 1-17)
Player to watch: Sophomore forward Kevin Coble
The lanky Coble has the ability to absolutely go off at any point, tallying the two highest scoring performances (37 and 34 points) of the conference season.
Talking point: The Wildcats won one game the entire conference season. Think they can win four in a row?
Odds to win it: 100 to 1

Indiana (25-6, 14-4)
Player to watch: Interim head coach Dan Dakich
OK, so he’s not a player, but the pressure is on Dakich. Since taking over for Kelvin Sampson, Dakich’s record (3-2) has not lived up to Indiana standards. He needs this tournament more than any other coach.
Talking point: The Big Ten Tournament is only about an hour away from Bloomington, so every game they stay alive is essentially a home game.
Odds to win it: 2 to 1

Illinois (13-18, 5-13)
Player to watch: Senior forward Brian Randle
Randle has been with the Fighting Illini for five seasons and never seemed to reach his full potential. The tournament gives him one last chance.
Talking point: The Fighting Illini shoot a dismal 60.8 percent from the free-throw line. Also, if they wear their orange uniforms, opponents may mistake an Illinois player’s thigh for the ball.
Odds to win it: 30 to 1

Iowa (13-18, 6-12)
Player to watch: Junior forward Cyrus Tate
Tate only averages 7.8 points per game, but he’s had major scoring outputs of 21, 18 and 26 already this season.
Talking point: The Hawkeyes have the ability to force teams out of sync with their low-scoring, slow-paced game.
Odds to win it: 70 to 1

Michigan (9-21, 5-13)
Player to watch: Sophomore forward Ekpe Udoh
The big man leads the conference with 2.87 blocks per game.
Talking point: The Wolverines appeared to be gathering a bit of momentum at the end of the season before collapsing against Purdue at home. More than one win in the tournament would be a surprise.
Odds to win it: 75 to 1

Minnesota (18-12, 8-10)
Player to watch: Senior center Spencer Tollackson
The 6-foot-9-inch, 260-pound piece of meat has the ability to disrupt any post player.
Talking point: New coach Tubby Smith has the ability to take any team deep in a tournament, and this team could be dangerous if they heat up.
Odds to win it: 24 to 1

Purdue (24-7, 15-3)
Player to watch: Sophomore guard Chris Kramer
Kramer earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Big Ten in his first season.
Talking point: The Boilermakers start no seniors — a tough characteristic to overcome in tournament time.
Odds to win it: 10 to 1

Wisconsin (26-4, 16-2)
Player to watch: Senior guard Michael Flowers
Flowers, a member of the Big Ten All-Defensive team, has the ability to lock down any team’s best player.
Talking point: As the Big Ten regular season champion, the pressure is on the Badgers to prove they can beat anyone in the conference.
Odds to win it: 3 to 1
