Word on the street

Do you write letters?

February 11, 2008

Amber Miller

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many people are putting away the keyboard and picking up the pen and paper to scroll love notes and cards for their sweeties. In honor of the holiday, we asked MSU students if they still write letters.

While many students preferred using technology to stay in touch, the written letter is certainly not dead. Whether they were writing to friends, family or business contacts, students agreed that snail mail is still a useful tool.

Ryan Taub

geological sciences junior

“No I do not. I have no one to write letters to.”

Ellen Robinson

journalism sophomore

“I write them to my friends at other schools because I’m actually from out of state and all my friends go to other out of state schools. I don’t just Facebook them, I write them letters.”

Eric Jensen

computer science junior

“Normally, I don’t. Only if it’s an official document sort of letter. There are just more convenient ways to communicate with friends and family.”

Lydia Good

criminal justice sophomore

“No I don’t really. I just find online e-mailing and instant messaging to be more convenient. (Letter writing) is something I want to start up again. When I was little it was always something I liked to do just for fun.”

Amber Miller

education junior

“Yes, for family members mostly. It just seems so much more personal than e-mail. It makes me light up to get a letter in the mail.”
