The MSU gymnastics team seems to have started a trend.
For the fifth time in as many opportunities, the team achieved a season-high score Saturday in a victory against Maryland, giving the team a 6-2 record. The team had a final score of 195.925, besting its previous high score of 194.675 and topping Maryland’s score of 192.925.
“I don’t think it’s very common for a team to do that — improve so much each time,” senior Rhiannon Banda-Scott said. “It’s really great to see each meet that we’re capable of doing better.”
Banda-Scott posted the highest score of the meet with a personal best 9.925 on the vault.
“I was really happy with my vault performance,” she said. “I’m capable of doing that kind of vault every time, so it’s really great to finally do it today, stick it and get the score I got.”
Banda-Scott and sophomore Rochelle Robinson said the team’s success was a result of focusing on the little things during practice.
“We definitely worked on a lot of the little things that we’ve been missing in the previous meets,” Robinson said. “We brought all that together better this meet.”
Robinson tied for third place on the balance beam, matching her personal best score of 9.8. She said the meet was important because the team tried some new lineups and were able to be successful.
“I felt it wasn’t necessarily who we were going against that made this important,” Robinson said. “It was important for the simple fact that we threw in people that aren’t normally in there.”
Freshman Kelsey Morley had personal best scores on both the floor and vault. She was one of eight Spartans who set personal records during the meet.
Head coach Kathie Klages said the meet was critical in giving the team some confidence before leaving East Lansing for three consecutive away meets, starting Saturday at Illinois.
“It was crucial for our athletes to perform well in order to get the confidence they need to hit the road and be able to perform on the road,” Klages said. “I think that each time they improve they gain confidence and believe in themselves a little bit more. I think that was huge.”
