Quirks make room charming

February 4, 2008

Finance freshman Alex Pryka practices the piano in his West Holden Hall dorm room.

Alex Pryka lives in a standard residence hall on the south side of campus, but his personal digs are anything but ordinary.

From the wallpapered and draped foyer to the dark-stained loft, black leather couch with matching throw, fruit bowl, 5-foot tall potted plant and “piano,” a Casio keyboard, Pryka has turned a bland interior into a luxurious home away from home.

The State News: How would you describe your dorm room?

Alex Pryka: I would say it’s tasteful, borderlining gaudy.

SN: Where do you get your interior design inspiration?

AP: I used to have a decorator. He was with us extensively for quite a while.

SN: Did you face any limitations because you live in a dorm?

AP: I think I turned limitations into possibilities. Obviously, there’s a loft in the dorm, but instead of having plywood, I stained it. I turned little quirky things in the dorm into accents.

SN: What do your friends think of your room?

AP: Most of them get a good chuckle from it.

SN: What advice do you have for people interested in sprucing up their college living spaces?

AP: I would say consider using wallpaper — you can actually get quite a bang for the buck, and it has a dramatic effect.

Oh, and lighting is absolutely critical, too — the fluorescent lights that come with the room are very drab and sterile.

Isopropyl light casts a warm yellow glow, it’s more inviting.

Do you have a well-decorated or otherwise super fly living space?

Have you put some extra time and work into making your dorm, apartment or house just right?

If so, e-mail your name, contact information and a sample photo to Liz Kersjes at kersjes@msu.edu to be featured in next week’s State News Decor.
