Schools need to be upgraded; building more is irresponsible

I feel Gov. Jennifer Granholm and our state Legislature are misinformed if they think more buildings and college services will solve our state’s array of educational problems.

Upon my return home to Brighton during break, I noticed something strange about my little brother’s fourth grade science book: It was the same one I used when I was his age.

My brother is learning with a 15-year-old science book, copyrighted in 1993. Do you have any idea how much science has changed in 15 years?

I think our state first needs to fund the schools we already have with new teaching materials, capable teachers and a safe infrastructure before we dig into our apparently endless reserve of money (as Granholm claims taxes will not be upped) and construct buildings we can’t adequately equip.

If we are short on books with X number of schools, we will be even shorter with 2X that number of schools. Simple math explains it.

Or maybe some of us can’t see that, as we missed that page of the math book because the four people that we shared it with were using it during that class.
