Thanksgiving playlist

November 19, 2007

Sure, times have changed since the Pilgrims and Native Americans were exchanging peace, love and small pox, but one thing remains the same — a hell of a lot of food.

So gear up your belly and ready your ears for the best songs that mention food. Besides, you’ll need a break with your iPod from dealing with all those relatives anyway.

1. “American Pie” by Don McLean

Screw that crappy remake by Madonna, McLean hit the nail on the head the first time. Have you ever heard this song and not had everyone around you start singing? Of course not. If you crank this tune at your Thanksgiving dinner, just wait for your uncle to start belting out the words.

2. “Sunshowers” by M.I.A.

She eats her mango with salt and pepper! Granted, not many of us will be eating mango on Turkey Day, but it’s virtually impossible to resist this song from British rapper M.I.A. I’m warning you now: It will be stuck in your head all day.

3. “Too Much Food” by Jason Mraz

Unfortunately, it seems like Mraz has fallen off the face of the earth. So until he comes back, savor his old tunes. With lyrics like, “I ain’t the one who’s gonna be missing the feast,” “Too Much Food” will gear you up to stuff your stomach.

4. “Coffee” by Copeland

Remember when emo music was actually kind of good? Copeland’s 2003 album, “Beneath the Medicine Tree,” bore the track “Coffee,” which serves as a great anthem for seeing old friends over the break.

5. “Yummy” by Gwen Stefani featuring Pharrell

This quirky techno-hop tune highlights Stefani’s daring personality while she talks about how absolutely delicious she feels. With the Pharrell appearance, what could be a straight-up weird song ends up being shockingly addictive.
