Wolverines blinded by excessive pride
U-M seniors running back Mike Hart, quarterback Chad Henne and offensive lineman Jake Long came back for their senior seasons to do two things: beat Ohio State for the first time and win a national championship. With Saturday’s 14-3 home loss to the Buckeyes, the Wolverines finished 8-4 and unranked.
It was a bitter ending for the U-M seniors, but a fitting one nonetheless. Hubris doomed these Wolverines before their season even began, as evidenced by their loss in the home opener to Appalachian State. Their excessive pride blinded them.
If U-M loses its bowl game and MSU wins its bowl game, the two will finish with 8-5 records. While this doesn’t mean both programs are at an equilibrium, it does say one thing — the Wolverines are overrated.
Spartan Nation can sit back and laugh just a little bit at the U-M seniors who viewed their season’s prospects through Rose Bowl-tinted glasses. The three seniors proved to be everything but indestructible, especially Henne and Hart, who spent much of the season battling or complaining about injuries.
As the saying goes, talk is cheap. The Wolverines talked a lot, and now they must eat their words. It might leave the team hungry, but those three seniors will walk away empty.
To echo MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio’s words: “Pride comes before the fall.”
