Weekend crime in review

November 5, 2007

While Saturday’s late-game collapse at Spartan Stadium left fans with an empty feeling, local police said Monday that jails were full with hearty partiers this past weekend. East Lansing’s jail was at capacity for most of the day Saturday and the early morning hours Sunday, housing about 50 people, East Lansing police Lt. Kevin Daley said. Here are the rest arrest numbers from Saturday night, which produced mixed results for campus and city police.

City numbers down

East Lansing police responded to 16 fights and issued 39 alcohol-related citations Saturday, Daley said.

The numbers in East Lansing are down significantly from MSU’s overtime loss to the Wolverines in 2005, when police responded to 24 fights and issued 108 alcohol-related citations. MSU police active

With 173 arrests made during the game, MSU police made more than twice as many stops as the last home football game against the University of Michigan.

According to the department’s online blotter, MSU police responded to seven assaults on campus last weekend, three more than the 2005 game.

Police reaction

Daley said the weekend was low key for a high-profile game. MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said several factors worked against MSU police when compared to the rivals’ last matchup.

“We had the 100th anniversary of the two teams playing, it was a sold-out game and there were 77,000 people there,” she said.
