New mask attack may be unrelated to other 3

November 1, 2007

Police believe the attempted sexual assault of a 22-year-old East Lansing resident by a suspect wearing a “Scream” mask Thursday is not related to three recent armed robberies because the incident was unarmed and did not involve a robbery.

According to East Lansing police, at about 6:30 a.m an unknown suspect entered the female resident’s house, located on Orchard Street between Grand River and Albert avenues, through an unlocked door.

The suspect fled the scene on foot after attempting to sexually assault the victim who was asleep on a couch in the house at the time of the break-in.

The victim was not injured.

Police described the suspect as a male with a thin build wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with an MSU logo on the front.

East Lansing and MSU police departments conducted a search of the area and employed an unsuccessful K-9 track of the suspect.

East Lansing police Capt. Tom Johnstone said the only link between Thursday’s assault and three recent armed robberies in the area is the “Scream” mask.

“The ‘Scream’ mask incidents that we know of do not appear to be related to this,” Johnstone said.

A food-delivery driver was robbed at knifepoint on Oct. 22 outside a Spartan Village apartment complex building, and Jimmy John’s, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road, was robbed at gunpoint by two suspects the next day.

A third armed robbery involving a suspect wearing the iconic mask took place at a Lansing nightclub on the same day as the Jimmy John’s incident.

According to Lansing and East Lansing police, the suspects in the two most recent incidents were of different races.

Johnstone said East Lansing police have been in contact with Meridian Township and MSU police regarding the “Scream” robberies.

He said the department is seeking a witness to Thursday’s attempted assault who may have been outside the house.

“There was a person who could potentially help, and they are strongly encouraged to come forward,” Johnstone said.
