Everyone deserves equal access to health care

Jessica Byrom poses an interesting question in her letter Only legally married couples deserve benefits (SN 11/4). Byrom wrote, “If we start allowing people to carry whomever they want on their health insurance, where is it going to stop?” Well, I hope it doesn’t.

As a future physician, I would be absolutely relieved if I could treat every patient on equal grounds. Imagine how simple and practical it would be for a doctor to diagnose and code a patient’s visit based on their actual health problem, instead of worrying about what the insurance companies will pay for.

Citizens who currently don’t have health insurance would be more apt to see their physician on a regular basis, which would prevent a majority of health complications that could threaten them later in life.

Jessica’s arguments are used to dodge current health care problems by shifting the blame from our government and insurance companies onto homosexual couples in committed relationships.

She has loyally followed her Republican leaders by pandering to the religious right’s obsession with homosexuality rather than coming up with solutions to the health crisis at hand.

I suggest that Byrom and her conservative idols actually follow their “right to life” ideology by displaying a concern for everyone’s right to life at any age and/or economical status. Instead, their hypocritical nonsense is just creating a wider gap between the “haves” and the “been-hads.”
