Police seek connections in recent campus assault

November 6, 2007

MSU police are investigating whether the attempted assault of a female by an unknown suspect Monday is related to three other attacks in the past three-and-a-half weeks.

A 26-year-old female told police that an unknown male grabbed her from behind by the neck as she walked at about 9:15 p.m. Monday on the south side of the Computer Center.

The victim grabbed the suspect’s right arm, threw him to the ground, struck him and kicked him in the groin, MSU police said.

She then ran to her car and contacted police regarding the incident. She was not injured in the attack.

The victim described the suspect as about 5-feet-8-inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt at the time.

As a result of the four attempted assaults, MSU police have increased patrol in certain areas, including along the river trail, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

On Oct. 14, a 19-year-old female reported being grabbed from behind on the trail between Jenison Field House and the Kellogg Center. The suspect was described as a 6-foot-tall male with a tattoo on his right arm and an unkempt beard.

Two days later, an 18-year-old female escaped a similar attack near the Business College Complex when a 6-foot-tall man dressed in dark clothing tried to assault her.

On Oct. 23, an 18-year-old student was grabbed from behind and groped after exiting the Main Library through the south side doors. The suspect in the attempted assault was last seen wearing a black winter coat with a hood and winter knit cap covering most of his face. No physical description of the suspect was provided.

Anyone with information regarding any of the four incidents is being asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222.
