Comic books — with their unique story lines and vivid imagery — have long captivated readers of all ages, and their popularity continues today.
Age of comics
Long before heroes like Spider-Man and Batman were bringing in millions at the box office, they were thrilling readers on the pages of comic books.
DC Comics, founded in 1935, began publishing Action Comics in 1938 with the introduction of Superman. Today DC Comics has expanded to include two additional lines: Vertigo and WildStorm.
Founded in 1939, Marvel Comics now boasts a roster of more than 5,000 characters. Today, Marvel Entertainment Inc. now offers everything from their comics to toys, home videos and DVDs.
Comics on campus
For the ultimate Spartan comic book enthusiast, MSU Libraries has a collection of more than 150,000 comic books.
All were published in the United States, some dating back to 1935.
The collection includes all genres, including gothic romance and teen humor.
Famous faces
A number of heroes and heroines have helped define the comic craze:
Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, was introduced in 1941. Wielding his signature shield, the 6-foot-2-inch, 240-pound hero wards off enemies with his skill in martial arts and intelligence.
The world met the Man of Steel, or Superman, in 1938. Since then he has inspired TV shows, movies and countless merchandise, not to mention the always popular phrase, “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman!”
