MSU excels at invite

September 30, 2007

Freshman Manon Noe returns a serve against a Cleveland State opponent Sunday during the Spartan Invitational at the Wilson Road tennis courts.

To put it lightly, it was a pretty good weekend for the MSU women’s tennis team.

At the Spartan Invitational held this weekend at the Wilson tennis courts, the Spartans routed their competition, going 30-1 in singles matches and 11-2 in doubles.

Eight other schools — Albany, Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Louisville, Morehead State and Toledo — competed in the tournament.

“On Friday before we set out to play, I really talked to the girls about energy, performance goals and really creating a positive energy on the courts and how it dictates to our play and hopefully win some matches,” MSU head coach Erica Perkins said.

MSU had its way Saturday, going 21-1 in singles and 4-0 in doubles.

“I was obviously very thrilled with how we played (Saturday),” Perkins said. “We won 24 out of 25 matches. But that’s a hard way to start sometimes. There’s a lot of pressure going into the second day, but we came out even better and I couldn’t be happier.”

Sunday, the Spartans went 9-0 in singles and 7-2 in doubles.

The day was capped off by senior Christine Bader, who won a hard-fought match over Cleveland State’s Melissa Holzinger, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Bader and her fellow senior captain Stephanie Kebler went 6-0 in singles on the weekend.

“(Bader) had a great weekend along with Stephanie Kebler as well,” Perkins said. “When your two captains go 3-0 in singles in the top two flights, you have to be happy. Christine battled through some health stuff today in her match and it was great to see her come back and win.”

Perkins also was happy with the play of her freshmen during the weekend.

“We have a very, very young, talented group,” Perkins said.

“We’re seeing a lot of improvement and I think they’ve brought a lot of positive energy to the team.”

When asked to pick out players who had great weekends, Perkins couldn’t because of how well the team performed as a whole.

“We had so many players who went undefeated on the weekend in singles,” Perkins said. “Everybody really stood out. I set forth a lot of challenges for people and they really stepped up and showed how they can play.”
