While sitting in the student section at Spartan Stadium, I could not help but feel I had seen this movie before.
Think about the possibility that the student section’s behavior is hurting you. Swearing and mistreating visiting fans reflects badly on us all. Visiting fans are going to be our future co-workers and bosses someday.
If students could only see that we are our own worst enemy, we could turn the corner tomorrow. It begins with each of us. We only have to be the loudest, not the most profane, at football games. Show some sportsmanship. When the swearing portion of a cheer comes around, just don’t do that part.
Treat the other team with respect. Ignore the fan who drifts through the student section wearing the other school’s colors. Don’t steal his hat and swear at him. Most of all, remember how fortunate you are to be at this great school. Don’t be a part of hurting your team, your school and yourself. Remember those who are wondering if they will ever see home again, the next time you are complaining about being chastised for getting drunk and swearing at your home. Being in college is a privilege, not a right. When you are complaining about “the same old Spartans,” ask yourself what you have done to change the mindset. How about starting this Saturday?
