MSU police investigate robbery by masked man

October 22, 2007

MSU police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred early Monday morning at Spartan Village after a food-delivery driver was threatened at knife point.

A 19-year-old female student reported an unknown male wearing dark clothing, black gloves and a mask from the movie “Scream” approached her while making a delivery to the apartment complex at 3:20 a.m., MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Upon entering a Spartan Village building near Crescent and Middlevale roads, the victim said she saw shadows in a stairwell and was trying to return to her car when she was confronted on a building terrace.

The suspect covered the victim’s mouth, told her not to scream and asked her where her money was, McGlothian-Taylor said. The victim said she saw a two-and-a-half to three-inch silver blade in the man’s hand.

She gave the suspect $24 and her Motorola cell phone, valued at $200, and the suspect fled with another person dressed in dark clothing, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Officers were dispatched to the scene after a 20-year-old female called police after hearing a woman screaming for help. An MSU canine unit was deployed, but did not yield any results.

The victim was not harmed in the incident.

MSU police said Spartan Village residents are being notified of the incident.

Chris Cooper, a manager at Cottage Inn Pizza, 615 E. Grand River Ave., said that for the safety of drivers the availability of delivery to some locations, such as Spartan Village and Dover’s Crossing, depends on the time of day.

“During the day, we tend to deliver everywhere,” Cooper said. “But at night we tend to cut back in certain areas.”

Drivers for Cottage Inn Pizza are not allowed to carry more than $20 and are required to deposit delivery money upon returning to the store, Cooper said.

He added that Cottage Inn Pizza delivery drivers have been robbed once this year and that most area locations have experienced two or three armed robberies of drivers.

At BTB Burrito, 403 E. Grand River Ave., drivers are encouraged to take their own precautionary steps to stay safe because delivery drivers are naturally vulnerable to robbery.

“There’s not a whole lot we can do, but we suggest they don’t carry a lot of their own money,” manager Ryan Podvin said.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222.
