Unknown suspects assault MSU students

October 18, 2007

Campus police are investigating two recent assaults involving female students who reported being attacked by unknown assailants at night.

According to an MSU police release, a 19-year-old female reported being grabbed from behind Sunday on the trail between Jenison Field House and the Kellogg Center.

A similar incident involving an 18-year-old student occurred Tuesday near the Business College Complex.

In each case, the female was grabbed from behind while walking on campus at about 11 p.m. and escaped without injury.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said the two incidents are being investigated to determine if there is a connection.

The 19-year-old woman told police she was walking on the trail when three unknown men walked past her.

According to the victim, one of the males reportedly turned around and grabbed the victim from behind.

The victim told police she immediately began punching and kicking the subject, allowing her to escape toward the Kellogg Center.

The suspect in the incident was described as a muscular, 6-foot-1-inch male with a full, unkempt beard and a tattoo on most of his right arm. He was wearing jeans and a dark short-sleeve shirt at the time.

Two days later, the 18-year-old student was grabbed from behind and groped as she walked between East Shaw Hall and the Business College Complex. When the victim struggled, the suspect let her free.

The second victim described the attacker as a 6-foot male wearing dark clothing.

Although the second victim couldn’t provide a detailed description of the suspect, McGlothian-Taylor said the close relation in height and clothing have MSU police interested in searching for a connection between the incidents.

Anyone with information about either assault is being asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222.
