Yoga nation

While no exact date can be found for its creation, the practice of yoga is said to go back thousands of years. This fall, find body, mind and spiritual rejuvenation through the ancient physical practice of yoga.

Popular Types

While several types of yoga exists, some forms have become most popular among American practitioners:

  • Hatha yoga is slow, allowing you to make smooth transitions between poses while breathing deeply and properly.
  • Kundalini yoga is one at a quicker pace, and includes more meditation and chanting.
  • Vinyasa yoga fuses movement with breath, and is all about timing your movements to match inhalations and exhalations.
  • Bikram yoga is all about heat. It is often performed in rooms reaching105 degrees. The idea is to promote the shedding of toxins through sweating and stretching.
  • Ashtanga yoga builds strength and tones the muscles through a more aerobic workout.

East Lansing will be welcoming a new yoga studio, Yoga State…of Mind, Body & Soul to be located on Grand River Avenue next to Splash of Color.

Owner Jen Hayes hopes to be open for classes by early to mid-October. Hayes, who specializes in working with athletes, offers both private and group lessons for all ages in pilates, and power yoga. Hayes plans to offer special workshops, along with special guests.

Supplies

While the main piece of equipment for yoga practice is the mat, which comes in an array of styles and colors, other items are available to help get the most of your experience:

  • A mat to provide cushioning between you and the floor and prevent slipping.
  • Bricks help you to adjust poses to fit your flexibility.
  • Straps help with transitioning into poses.
  • A bag to carry your mat and other supplies.

Attire

Working out can be stressful, but yoga is all about relaxation. Whatever you choose, keep it comfortable, but here are some suggestions to keep in mind:

  • Yoga is a fluid exercise, so choose clothing that is easy to move. It can be tight or loose, whatever is comfortable.
  • Fitness shoes are available and can be worn if desired, but yoga is mainly done barefoot.
  • Choose fabrics that allow the body to breath and sweat.
