Vending vandals hit 2 more campus areas

September 18, 2007

The arrest of a Lansing man last week doesn’t appear to have stopped the recent flurry of vending machine vandalizations on campus.

A PepsiCo Inc. vending machine was damaged Sunday afternoon at the Business College Complex, and a Crane Co. vending machine was vandalized early Monday morning at the MSU College of Law Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

An estimated total of $1,500 worth of damage was caused in the two attacks.

The incidents come a week after police arrested Lamar Pierson Jr. and charged him on Sept. 10 with two counts of breaking and entering into a coin-operated device.

McGlothian-Taylor said a warrant has been issued for another suspect with ties to the vandalizations.

MSU police would not comment as to whether the suspects in the most recent vandalizations are linked to Pierson and another unnamed suspect, but McGlothian-Taylor said the damage sustained by the two machines last weekend and those attacked in the last two months is consistent.

Since late July, at least 11 vending machines have been vandalized across campus. It’s estimated that these incidents have caused more than $15,000 in damage.

A witness at the Business College Complex incident described seeing a 5-foot-8-inch male with short black hair and a slim build wearing black pants and a black coat fleeing the scene, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Officers responded to the witness’ 911 call, but did not track down the suspect after he reportedly ran north toward Olin Health Center.

At the second vandalization, a witness reported seeing a suspect wearing all black fleeing the scene in an unknown direction, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Both incidents are still under investigation.

Pierson had a pretrial hearing Tuesday and his case was forwarded to Lansing circuit court, a district court clerk said. Each count of breaking and entering into a coin-operated device carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.

Pierson was arrested last week at Bessey Hall during an attempted vandalization.

Pierson’s lawyer was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.

MSU police are asking anyone with information to contact the department at (517) 355-2222.
