Spice Girls a guilty pleasure

Let’s get straight to the point.
I still listen to the Spice Girls.
Don’t pretend you don’t. There are very few things better than belting out “Wannabe” in your car with your girlfriends (or boyfriends … you know what I mean), or watching the old music videos of “Spice Up Your Life” and “2 Become 1” on YouTube.com. I’ll also admit the Spice Girls are sometimes kitsch and tacky, but it’s their ridiculous charm that makes them, well, cute.
My third-grade birthday party was devoted to the Spice Girls, complete with Spice Girls plates, Barbie-sized Spice Girls Dolls (I had all five, and they even donned the same tattoos of the ladies) and Spice Girls CD singles as gifts. And, honestly, I’d do it again.
Luckily, I just might be able to. The group will be reuniting for a 15-city tour, as well as releasing a Greatest Hits album.
Sure, the closest they get to Michigan is Toronto, but I was willing to make the trek to a different country just to throw around peace signs and shout “Girl Power!” – English accent included.
But just when I was ready to pull out my Barbies and platform shoes, I discovered that Ticketmaster won’t be providing tickets. Instead, I have to register to be chosen for the tickets via www.thespicegirls.com. And, frankly, that’s a huge pain in the butt.
What makes seeing the Spice Girls in concert great is the fact that they haven’t totally ruined their lives (cough, Britney, cough). Sure, there was that little fiasco with Geri quitting the group or whatever, but there have been no major scandals with any of the Spice Girls. The most dramatic thing has been Scary Spice getting knocked up by Eddie Murphy. But, no one got it on tape, so that’s OK.
So although I have to go through the trouble of REGISTERING for a CHANCE to go see my guilty pleasure, it’s a sacrifice I’ll take. I might as well see them in concert before one of them develops a drug habit.
