Spartans split during road weekend, Sinacola injured

September 9, 2007

Senior defender Erin Doan heads the ball in a Sunday, Sept. 2 contest against Syracuse. The Spartans split on the road this weekend and will return home Wednesday.

Two close games turned out two different results for the MSU women’s soccer team on their weekend road trip. The Spartans managed a split on their trip out East, beating Penn 1-0 Friday and dropping 2-1 to Lehigh in overtime Sunday.

Friday’s game was scoreless until senior midfielder Maureen Pawlak scored a goal at the 84:41 mark to give the Spartans the win.

In Sunday’s match, MSU got on the board first when sophomore forward Lauren Hill scored her first goal of the season at the 12:24 mark. Lehigh evened up the game in the 24th minute, and the score remained tied until overtime.

Lehigh ended the game at the 94:36 mark when Melissa Montalvo kicked in the game winner to drop MSU’s record to 2-2 on the season.

Though the Spartans only managed to get one win on the road trip, head coach Tom Saxton was happy with how his squad performed.

“We started good early by getting an early goal from Lauren Hill to go up 1-0,” Saxton said about Sunday’s contest. “We had a couple other chances, but then we had a break down on our defense and gave up a very soft goal.

“We regrouped and had control for the rest of the game, and it was a very much hard fought defensive battle; Lehigh was a great defensive team.”

The Spartans played Sunday without sophomore midfielder Lauren Sinacola, who sprained her knee in Friday’s contest against Penn.

Saxton said the injury was nothing major, and doesn’t expect Sinacola to miss a significant amount of time.

With Sinacola out, the Spartans relied on their depth, and still played Lehigh close.

“Offensively, we need to improve our attacks,” Saxton said about getting ready for Wednesday’s game against Detroit. “Defensively, we just have to get healthy. We used six or seven defenders, and we just have to try to be as healthy as we can.

“We were fortunate to win against Penn, they had the better of the game, and today it just went the opposite.”
