Convicted murderer to have new trial

September 21, 2007

A motion for a new trial has been filed by Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III in the case against convicted murderer Claude McCollum.
McCollum was found guilty of the 2005 rape and murder of Lansing Community College professor Carolyn Kronenberg and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in Feb. 2006.
Earlier this month, the investigation into the murder was reopened by the Ingham County prosecutor’s office as new evidence was brought to light.
Dunnings issued a statement Friday saying the new evidence is “substantial enough to merit a new trial for Mr. McCollum.” He would not comment on the specifics of the evidence, citing that the investigation is still ongoing and the possibility of a new trial.
The motion was filed jointly by Dunnings and McCollum’s attorney, Peter Ellenson, with the Michigan Court of Appeals.
