Lack of serial killer news coverage alarming to some

I am disappointed how both The State News and the MSU administration have informed students regarding the serial killer that was recently caught in Lansing. Several students I have spoken to had no idea there was a murder spree occurring until The State News published the article about the capture of the accused murderer. Lots of students live in Lansing and even more visit the city for its bars and coffee shops.

Someone should have informed them about what was going on.

The State News conducted online polls about whether Virginia Tech should have informed students about the gunman on their campus, and the president of Eastern Michigan University was fired for not informing students of a murder that happened on their campus.

No one in our university has been informing students about a series of murders that have been occurring in their own community. We have heard about the new emergency text message system the university has in place, but if they can’t even e-mail students about a man killing women who live alone in Lansing, how can we be sure they will inform us of other emergency situations? The university community is not confined to the MSU campus, and both our administration and our newspaper should be making students aware of dangerous situations when they arise in the Lansing area.
