College should fill dean seat with controversial candidate

Very recently, the University of California, Irvine rescinded an offer to distinguished Duke University School of Law professor Erwin Chemerinsky to serve as its dean. This rescission has caused much controversy and the overriding opinion is that Chemerinsky is too politically controversial for the position because he is very liberal.

Nonetheless, this is no reason to reject a brilliant mind. An institution should want inclusion from all sides, liberal and conservative, not just one or the other. It was hypocritical for conservatives to oppose his selection. Conservatives are defenders of inclusion and should be enemies of exclusion since it has happened to them on campuses all over this country.

Chemerinsky provides an opportunity to grow and take the law school to the next level. Thus, if Chemerinsky can promise to promote an inclusive policy, where both liberals and conservatives will have an equal opportunity, MSU College of Law should look seriously into extending an offer to Chemerinsky to fill the position of dean.
