Heisman watch

Going into the fourth week of the college football season, these six candidates are the frontrunners

Darren McFadden
RB, Arkansas

The preseason favorite has done nothing to fall from the top spot, rushing for 346 yards with three touchdowns for the 1-1 Razorbacks. With an average of 173 yards a game, McFadden also has a 42-yard touchdown pass on his resume.

Colt Brennan
QB, Hawaii

He may be considered a system quarterback playing against inferior competition, but it takes someone special to put up this type of stats: 1,262 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, a 77.4 completion percentage and four rushing touchdowns.

Tim Tebow
QB, Florida

“The Hammer” is proving to have quite an arm, too, throwing for 835 yards and eight touchdowns. Tebow’s still a rushing threat though, rushing for 192 yards and five touchdowns.

Ray Rice
RB, Rutgers

Rice has far better numbers than McFadden (431 yards rushing, eight touchdowns), and the Scarlet Knights are still undefeated. If Arkansas finishes below .500 in the SEC and Rice leads Rutgers past the likes of West Virginia and Louisville, he’ll be invited to New York.

Steve Slaton
RB, West Virginia

Slaton busted back into the picture with a three-touchdown game against Maryland. He gets the nod over quarterback Pat White because White’s completion percentage is not up to par with the other quarterbacks.

Brian Brohm
QB, Louisville

Sure, Louisville lost to Kentucky, but Brohm’s individual numbers are Heisman worthy: 1,142 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception. If the Cardinals can run the table the rest of the way, Brohm might have a legitimate shot at the trophy.
