Weather impacts Welcome Week events

August 26, 2007

Katie Gerard, an advertising senior, plays in the rain from her porch on Albert Avenue. After a major downpour Friday, Gerard’s porch continued to pour rain due to roof run-off.

MSU students braved Welcome Week despite the tornado warning, storms and power outages.

Human resource management and psychology senior Darcel Spence moved in right before the storm hit Friday afternoon.

“I had just gotten to Meijer when I heard (the tornado warning),” Spence said. “I had to sit in front of Meijer until it stopped.”

Friday’s tornado warning brought back memories for Spence.

“My freshman year, the day I moved in, there was a tornado warning, too,” Spence said. “They moved all of us into the dorm basement the first day we got there.”

Students were not the only ones affected by the constant rain this past week. Menna’s Joint, 115 Albert Ave., closed on Sunday due to “emergency construction.”

John Blake, manager at Menna’s Joint in Hannah Plaza, said the carpet flooded at the Albert Avenue location because of the rainstorms East Lansing has been experienced.

“It caught us off guard,” Blake said. “I’m sure it hurt business … they’re still open for delivery though.”

The University Activities Board, or UAB, puts time and effort into making sure students have affordable activities to participate in during Welcome Week and throughout the year.

On Saturday, Augustana, Big City Rock and The Hard Lessons performed at Munn field for students.

UAB did have the weather in mind while choosing a location. In case of rain, the concert would have been held in the Auditorium.

“As far as I know, the attendance did not decrease … I think that everyone was pleased with the attendance,” said Lauren Pachuta UAB member and nursing sophomore.
