Spartans split exhibition pair

The MSU men’s soccer team split its two exhibition contests last week, knocking off Illinois-Chicago 2-1 at Old College Field on Wednesday before falling to Akron, 2-0, on Friday.

On Wednesday, the Spartans got two first half goals from senior forward Kenzo Webster and senior defender Rauwshan McKenzie and were able cruise to a 2-1 win over Illinois-Chicago.

“I was pleased with how we played,” MSU head coach Joe Baum said in a press release.

“We didn’t play great, but we were very solid. We passed and defended very nicely.”

Senior Chris Austin and freshman Jeremy Clark each played one half in goal and stopped one shot apiece.

Things didn’t go as well for MSU on Friday in Fort Wayne, Ind., as the Spartans dropped a shortened 2-0 decision to Akron.

Due to foul weather, the game was limited to two 30-minute halves.

Akron took a 1-0 lead early in the second half and held the lead until adding an insurance goal with three minutes to play in the contest.

Akron outshot the Spartans 11-6 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal.

“It was a strange match,” Baum said in a press release. “It was wet and not the best of conditions, but Akron was more aggressive and they deserved to win. They adjusted to the conditions better than we did.”

The Spartans open the regular season home against Oregon State at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Old College Field.

They’ll play again Sunday against Western Kentucky.
