Pretrial hearing set for Reno's stabbing

August 26, 2007

An East Lansing man charged with stabbing a Lansing resident outside a local bar will go to court this week.

Frank DeWayne West faces an assault with intent to murder charge stemming from an Aug. 19 stabbing outside Reno’s East Side Sportsbar & Grill, 1310 Abbot Road. He is scheduled to attend a pretrial hearing at 8:30 am Tuesday at the 54-B District Court in East Lansing.

West was arrested at his workplace in Lansing three days after the altercation, East Lansing police Capt. Kim Johnson said.

West was arraigned Thursday and charged with one count of assault with intent to murder. Bond was set at $1 million.

If convicted of the felony charge, West could be sentenced to life in prison.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 a.m. following a short argument between the victim and the suspect after the restaurant’s closure, police said.

The victim was taken to Sparrow Hospital immediately following the stabbing and was released Tuesday, Johnson said. He is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.

Johnson said there is no known prior history between the victim and the suspect.

Ingham County Juvenile Justice and Community Outreach Coordinator Scott Hughes said the county’s prosecuting office has “eight civilian witnesses listed in our court records,” one of whom is the victim.

Reno’s President Jessie Stipcak said the restaurant’s security staff canvassed the parking lot to ensure all patrons had left prior to the incident.

“When we locked up, everybody appeared to have left, and that’s when we secured the building,” Stipcak said.

“We definitely have our security check to make sure everybody has left the building and we’re diligently continuing that practice.”

Stipcak said there was no indication of an argument brewing between the victim and suspect inside the restaurant.

While arguments are common throughout the city, Johnson said similar assaults are very rare.

“We have tons of fights, but as for stabbing victims, they don’t happen very often at all,” he said.

West had an attorney present for his arraignment, but is expected to receive a permanent court-appointed attorney within two weeks.

Judge Richard D. Ball presided at the arraignment held at the 54-B District Court in East Lansing. Judge David L. Jordon will preside over the pretrial hearing and preliminary examination, which is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.
